vocal
Speaking up clearly and openly about your opinions.
Vocal means relating to the voice or speaking up clearly about your opinions.
When someone is described as vocal, it usually means they express their thoughts openly and aren't shy about sharing what they believe. A vocal supporter of the school recycling program doesn't just agree quietly but actively talks about why it matters. A student who is vocal in class participates often, asking questions and contributing ideas.
The word also refers literally to the voice and singing. Vocal cords are the parts of your throat that vibrate to create sound when you speak or sing. Vocal music means music with singing, as opposed to purely instrumental music. A choir director might praise a singer's vocal range, meaning how high and low they can sing.
Being vocal takes courage because it means making your position known, even when others might disagree. A vocal critic speaks out against something they think is wrong. A vocal minority is a small group that makes its views heard loudly and clearly. The opposite of vocal is quiet or silent: someone who stays silent keeps their opinions to themselves, while someone vocal makes sure their voice is heard.
