vocation
Work that feels like your special calling or life purpose.
A vocation is work that feels like your calling or purpose, something you feel deeply meant to do. The word comes from the Latin vocare, meaning “to call,” suggesting that some work seems to call to certain people.
When a teacher describes teaching as her vocation, she means it's what she feels meant to do, work that gives her life meaning and satisfaction. A doctor might feel called to medicine because healing people fits with his deepest sense of purpose. A carpenter whose vocation is woodworking feels deeply satisfied creating beautiful, useful objects with his hands, finding fulfillment in the craft itself.
A vocation is different from simply having skills or finding work you're good at. You might be talented at math but not feel it's your vocation. Someone else might struggle to learn an instrument but feel that making music is absolutely what they're meant to do.
People often discover their vocation by noticing what energizes them rather than drains them, what problems they care deeply about solving, or what they'd do even if they weren't being paid. A veterinarian whose vocation is helping animals becomes absorbed in the work itself, finding it engaging and meaningful.
Not everyone finds a clear vocation, and that's normal. But when someone does discover work that feels like their calling, they've found their vocation.
