waistband
A strip of fabric around the top of pants or skirts.
A waistband is the strip of fabric that wraps around your waist at the top of pants, shorts, or a skirt. It's usually reinforced with elastic or stiffer material to help the clothing stay up and fit snugly. When you button or zip your jeans, you're fastening the waistband.
The waistband matters because it determines how comfortable your clothes feel and whether they'll stay in place while you move. A too-tight waistband digs in uncomfortably, while a too-loose one means constantly hitching up your pants. Many waistbands have an adjustable feature: elastic that stretches, a drawstring you can tighten, or belt loops where you can add a belt for extra support.
You'll find waistbands on almost everything you wear below your waist: athletic shorts with elastic waistbands for running and playing, dress pants with structured waistbands and belt loops, and skirts with fitted waistbands that help them hang properly. Some waistbands sit right at your natural waist (around your belly button), while others sit lower on your hips. The waistband is that crucial boundary where your shirt meets your pants, and where comfort really begins.
