wanton
Recklessly cruel or harmful for no good reason.
Wanton describes actions that are reckless and deliberately harmful, done without any good reason or care for consequences. When vandals cause wanton destruction in a park, they're destroying property just because they feel like it, with no thought for the people who will be hurt or inconvenienced.
The word carries a sense of unnecessary cruelty or carelessness. Wanton cruelty to animals means hurting them for no reason, not even misguided ones. Wanton waste means throwing away or destroying things of value simply because you don't care. A bully who trips someone in the hallway for no reason other than entertainment is acting with wanton disregard for that person's safety and dignity.
What makes something wanton is that it combines being wrong with being pointless. Someone might make a terrible mistake while trying to help, but that wouldn't be wanton. Wanton acts combine cruelty or carelessness with a complete lack of justification. The word suggests both the action itself and the troubling mindset behind it: doing harm simply because you can, with no concern for others.
