warbler
A small, colorful songbird that sings and flits through trees.
A warbler is a small songbird known for its beautiful, often complex singing. Most warblers are only about as long as your finger, with delicate builds and quick, energetic movements as they hop through branches searching for insects.
North America has dozens of warbler species, each with distinctive colors and patterns. The yellow warbler is bright lemon yellow, while the black-and-white warbler looks like it's wearing a striped suit. Many warblers spend summers in North America and winters in Central or South America, making incredible journeys twice a year despite their tiny size.
Birdwatchers get particularly excited about warblers each spring, when these birds return from migration in brilliant breeding colors. A single morning in May might reveal ten different warbler species flitting through the treetops, each with its own song.
If you spot a small, active bird gleaming with yellow, blue, or orange patches darting through tree branches, you might have found a warbler.
