water buffalo
A large, gentle farm animal that works in wet fields.
A water buffalo is a large, powerful animal with curved horns that lives in Asia and parts of Africa. These animals love spending time in water and mud, which helps them stay cool in hot climates. You might see a water buffalo standing chest-deep in a river or wallowing in a muddy pond, looking perfectly content.
For thousands of years, farmers in countries like India, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines have relied on water buffalo to plow rice fields, pull heavy carts, and provide milk. Water buffalo are incredibly strong and can work in wet, muddy conditions where tractors would get stuck. They have wide, splayed hooves that help them walk through soggy ground without sinking.
Despite their size and strength, water buffalo are generally gentle and calm animals when treated well. A farmer might guide a water buffalo through the fields using simple commands, trusting the animal to pull a plow steadily through the mud. While they look similar to the American bison (sometimes incorrectly called buffalo), water buffalo are a completely different species adapted to tropical climates and working in partnership with humans.
