weapon
An object used to hurt, damage, or injure someone.
A weapon is any object designed or used to cause harm, damage, or injury. Throughout history, humans have created weapons for hunting, self-defense, and warfare. Ancient people fashioned spears and arrows from stone and wood. Medieval knights wielded swords and axes. Modern militaries use sophisticated guns, missiles, and other advanced technology.
Not everything used as a weapon was designed for that purpose. A baseball bat is sports equipment, but someone could use it as a weapon. A kitchen knife is a tool for preparing food, but it becomes a weapon if someone uses it to hurt another person. This is why we sometimes say something was “used as a weapon” rather than simply calling it a weapon.
The word also appears in expressions and metaphors. People talk about having a “secret weapon” when they have a special advantage, like a chess player's clever strategy or a baker's special ingredient. Someone might say that humor is their weapon of choice for handling difficult situations, meaning it's their preferred tool for dealing with problems.
In many places, laws regulate who can own weapons and how they can be used. While weapons have shaped human history and remain part of military defense and law enforcement, most people go through their daily lives without encountering weapons, living in communities where conflicts are resolved through words and cooperation rather than force.
