weather
The condition of the air outside, like sun, rain, or wind.
The weather is the condition of the atmosphere at a particular time and place: whether it's sunny or cloudy, hot or cold, rainy or dry, windy or calm. When you look out the window in the morning to decide what to wear, you're checking the weather.
Weather changes constantly, sometimes hour by hour. A sunny morning can turn into a rainy afternoon. This happens because air masses move around, carrying different temperatures and moisture. Meteorologists study weather patterns to predict what's coming, though weather can be tricky to forecast perfectly because so many factors affect it.
People have always been interested in weather because it shapes daily life. Farmers need to know when rain is coming. Sailors need to avoid storms. Even your weekend plans might change if the forecast calls for thunderstorms instead of sunshine.
The word also means to survive or endure something difficult. A ship that weathers a storm makes it through safely. When someone weathers a tough situation, like a disagreement with a friend, they handle it and come out okay on the other side. Something that is weather-beaten has been worn down by long exposure to sun, rain, and wind, like an old barn with faded, cracked paint.
