A weightlifter is someone who trains by lifting heavy weights to build strength and muscle. You might see weightlifters at the gym hoisting barbells loaded with iron plates, or doing exercises like squats, bench presses, and deadlifts.
The term can refer to anyone who lifts weights regularly as part of their fitness routine, from your neighbor working out in their garage to serious athletes competing in strength sports. Professional weightlifters compete in Olympic weightlifting, where they perform two specific lifts: the snatch (lifting the barbell from the ground to overhead in one motion) and the clean and jerk (lifting it to the shoulders, then pushing it overhead). These athletes train for years to lift incredible amounts, sometimes hoisting more than twice their own body weight over their heads.
Weightlifting requires more than raw power. Successful weightlifters need technique, discipline, and patience, since building real strength takes consistent effort over months and years. A weightlifter might spend hours perfecting their form, gradually adding small amounts of weight as they get stronger, always respecting what their body can safely handle.
