whoa
A word you say to make someone or something stop.
Whoa is what you say when you want something to stop or slow down, especially a horse. When a rider pulls gently on the reins and says whoa, a well-trained horse knows to stop moving.
People use whoa in other situations too. If your friend is talking too fast or getting too excited, you might say “Whoa, slow down!” When you see something surprising or impressive, whoa expresses that feeling: “Whoa, look at that enormous tree!” A scientist might shout whoa when a dangerous experiment needs to stop immediately.
The word captures that moment when you need to pause and take stock of what's happening. It's less formal than saying “stop” or “wait,” and it carries a sense of wanting to regain control gently rather than harshly. When things are moving too quickly, whether it's a galloping horse, a rushing conversation, or a situation spinning out of control, whoa is your signal to everyone (including yourself) that it's time to take a breath and settle down.
