Wildness is the quality of being untamed, uncontrolled, or existing in a natural state without human influence. A forest full of wildness has trees growing where they want, animals living by their own instincts, and streams flowing along paths carved by nature rather than engineers. The wildness of a thunderstorm means its power and unpredictability: you can't tell it where to rain or when to stop.

When people talk about wildness in nature, they often mean places that humans haven't changed much. A backyard garden isn't wild, but a remote mountain range where grizzly bears roam has real wildness to it. Conservation groups work to preserve the wildness of certain areas so future generations can experience nature as it existed before cities and farms.

The word can also describe behavior that's energetic, unrestrained, or a bit reckless. A playground might erupt in wildness during recess, with kids running and shouting everywhere. Someone might describe the wildness of a party that got too loud and chaotic. Your little brother might have a certain wildness to him when he's excited, bouncing off the walls and unable to sit still.

There's something valuable about wildness: it represents freedom, authenticity, and the raw energy of life before rules and structures shape it into something too predictable.
