A windowpane is a single sheet of glass that fits into a window frame. Many windows are divided into sections by wooden or metal strips, and each glass section is a separate pane. Older houses often have windows with many small panes, while modern buildings might use large single panes that fill an entire window.
When you hear someone say “clear as a windowpane,” they mean something is perfectly transparent and easy to see through or understand.
Window panes can break if hit by a baseball or hailstone, which is why people sometimes board up windows during storms. Replacing a broken pane requires carefully removing the old glass, measuring the opening exactly, and fitting in a new piece. In cold weather, you might notice frost forming beautiful patterns on windowpanes, or see condensation on the inside when it's much warmer indoors than outside. These temperature differences show how glass, despite being solid, isn't a perfect barrier between inside and outside.
