wingtip
The pointed end of an airplane’s wing, farthest from the body.
A wingtip is the pointed end of an airplane's wing, the part farthest from the body of the plane. If you look out an airplane window during a flight, you can usually see the wingtip extending into the sky. Engineers design wingtips carefully because they affect how efficiently a plane flies through the air. Many modern planes have curved or angled wingtips called winglets that reduce drag and save fuel.
The word also describes a classic style of dress shoe. Wingtip shoes get their name from their distinctive toe design: decorative perforations (tiny holes) form a pattern that spreads across the toe like the shape of a bird's outstretched wings. These formal leather shoes, popular since the early 1900s, often appear at business meetings, weddings, and other dressy occasions. The wing-shaped pattern makes them easy to recognize among other dress shoes.
