wisecrack
A quick, clever joke or funny remark.
A wisecrack is a clever, funny remark, often made quickly in response to something someone else has said. When your friend trips over their backpack and you quip, “Nice dismount!”, that's a wisecrack. When a character in a movie delivers a snappy joke right before something dramatic happens, they're wisecracking.
The word combines “wise” (meaning clever) with “crack” (an old slang term for a sharp remark), though wisecracks aren't necessarily wise in the serious sense. They're more about being quick-witted and amusing. A class clown who always has a funny comment ready is probably good at wisecracking.
Wisecracks walk a fine line: they can lighten a tense moment and make people laugh, but poorly timed ones can seem disrespectful or annoying. If your teacher is explaining something important and someone keeps making wisecracks, the humor stops being funny and starts disrupting the class. The best wisecrackers know when their jokes will land well and when silence is the better choice. There's real skill in being funny without being obnoxious, which is why truly clever wisecracks are impressive and memorable.
