wizard
A person in stories who uses magic powers and spells.
A wizard is a person with magical powers who appears in legends, fairy tales, and fantasy stories. Wizards can cast spells, brew potions, and perform enchantments that defy the normal laws of nature. They're often portrayed as wise old men with long beards and pointed hats, like Merlin in the legends of King Arthur, though wizards in stories come in all ages and appearances.
In stories, wizards typically spend years studying ancient books of magic and mastering difficult spells. Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings is probably the most famous wizard in modern literature, using his powers to help fight evil and guide others.
In everyday conversation, people sometimes call someone a wizard at something when they're extraordinarily skilled at it. If your friend can fix any broken computer, you might say she's “a wizard with technology.” A chef who creates amazing dishes might be called “a wizard in the kitchen.” This usage captures the idea that their skills seem almost magical to others.
The word can also refer specifically to a male magic user, while witch can refer to a female one, though in modern fantasy stories these distinctions often blur or disappear.
