workbench
A strong table used for building, fixing, or crafting things.
A workbench is a sturdy table designed for doing hands-on work, especially carpentry, crafts, or repairs. Unlike a regular table where you might eat dinner or do homework, a workbench is built to handle hammering, sawing, gluing, and other activities that require a solid, stable surface.
Most workbenches have thick wooden or metal tops that won't wobble when you're working. Many include built-in features like vises (clamps that hold wood steady while you work), drawers for storing tools, and pegboards above the surface where you can hang saws, hammers, and screwdrivers within easy reach.
You'll find workbenches in garages, workshops, school makerspaces, and anywhere people build or fix things. A carpenter might use one to construct furniture, while a jewelry maker might have a smaller workbench for detailed metalwork. Scientists also use workbenches in laboratories, though they usually call them lab benches.
When someone has a project spread across their workbench, with tools scattered around and sawdust collecting, that's a sign of serious building or fixing in progress.
