workday
A regular day when people go to their jobs or school.
A workday is a day when people go to their jobs or when businesses and schools are open for regular activities. For most people, workdays are Monday through Friday, while Saturday and Sunday are the weekend. When your parents leave for work in the morning and come home in the evening, that's a workday for them.
The word also refers to the hours someone actually works during that day. Some people have an eight-hour workday, others work ten or twelve hours. A construction worker's workday might start at sunrise, while a baker's workday might begin before dawn so fresh bread is ready when the bakery opens.
Teachers sometimes use workday differently: a workday at school means time set aside for students to work on assignments or projects, rather than learning new material. Your teacher might announce, “Today is a workday for finishing your science posters.”
The opposite of a workday is a day off, a holiday, or the weekend. When someone says “just another workday,” they usually mean an ordinary, routine day without anything special happening.
