wrangler
A person who takes care of and controls farm animals.
A wrangler is someone who handles and takes care of animals, especially horses or cattle. On a ranch, wranglers spend their days herding cattle across wide pastures, breaking in young horses, and making sure the animals stay healthy and safe. The job requires skill with ropes and saddles, patience with stubborn animals, and the ability to stay calm when a horse suddenly bolts or a cow wanders off from the herd.
Wranglers don't just sit pretty on horses. They work hard in all kinds of weather, fixing fences, rounding up strays, and solving problems as they come up.
On movie sets, horse wranglers train and manage all the animals that appear on camera. They teach horses to rear up dramatically or stand perfectly still during filming. You might also hear the word used more loosely: someone who wrangles children at a birthday party is trying to organize and manage an energetic, chaotic group. But the classic wrangler is still that skilled ranch hand working with livestock under the open sky.
